Welcome to the “Translation” section of TSQ. This recurring feature is intended to broaden the field of transgender studies beyond its Anglophone roots, by highlighting texts originating in languages other than English and by making visible the work of translation necessary to bring to English-reading audiences the work of researchers, writers, thinkers, and activists from around the world. The “Translation” section will feature both historical documents as well as contemporary voices that simultaneously challenge the Anglocentric bias of the transgender studies field while expanding the field's breadth and reach. This first “Translation” section features work by Fabian Alfie, who translates a passage describing cross-dressing in a fourteenth-century Italian text by Giovanni Sercambi, and by S. P. F. Dale, who translates an article by present-day Japanese author and transfeminist activist Ray Tanaka.
