This article traces the poetic and artistic evocations of Billie Holiday’s performance of “Strange Fruit” through cross-media strands linking Michael S. Harper, Rita Dove, and Glenn Ligon. Taken together, the work of these three black artists forms a network of memorials that act to mark Holiday’s “unmarked grave.”
