Steve McQueen’s retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago argued for a relationship between his gallery work and his current cinematic productions. Opening a year before the release of his successful 12 Years a Slave, this retrospective exhibition demonstrated McQueen’s intimate knowledge of the objects and effects of lens-based practice.
