bruce robbins is Old Dominion Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University. His latest book is Perpetual War: Cosmopolitanism from the Viewpoint of Violence (Duke University Press, 2012). He is also the director of the documentary film Some of My Best Friends Are Zionists (2013).

This essay argues that Étienne Balibar, in his essay on Althusser’s dramaturgy, uses the analogy between ideology and theatrical performance to defend the significance of politics as a performance that is anything but free—that is, rather, informed and invested with meaning by its constraints.
