Revolution and Rehearsal in the Global South: Unlearning the Archive

Ariella Aïsha Azoulay is professor of comparative literature and modern culture and media at Brown University. She is a curator and documentary filmmaker.

Sohail Daulatzai's practice explores the afterlives of empire through text, short film/video, sound, and the curatorial. He is the author and coeditor of several books, essays, liner notes, and other ephemera. He has directed film/video for Yasiin Bey, Algiers, and a cine-geography for Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine. He curated the celebrated exhibits “Return of the Mecca: The Art of Islam and Hip-Hop” and “Histories Absolved: Revolutionary Cuban Poster Art and the Muslim International.” He is a professor in the Departments of Film and Media Studies, African American Studies, and Global Middle East Studies at the University of California, Irvine.

Arash Davari is assistant professor in the Department of Politics at Whitman College. His articles, chapters, translations, and review essays have appeared in Political Theory and Radical Philosophy, among other venues. His first book manuscript reconstructs the discursive conditions that made the 1979 revolution in Iran possible to reappraise debates about self-determination in contemporary political thought.

Mamadou Diallo is a contributing editor of Chimurenga Chronic and a PhD student in the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University. His doctoral research, through a study of laïcité in Senegal in the early years after independence, investigates the relationships between historical self-consciousness, the sacred, and politics.

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French artist. She is a professor of artistic strategies at the Angewandte University in Vienna and a founding member of La Cinémathèque de Tanger, an artist-run nonprofit organization based in Tangiers, Morocco. Khalili's work has been the subject of many international solo exhibitions.

Elleni Centime Zeleke is assistant professor of African studies in the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University. Zeleke is the author of Ethiopia in Theory: Revolution and Knowledge Production, 1964–2016 (Brill/Haymarket). Her current project examines the ongoing civil war in Ethiopia in relation to the history of Black political thought.
